Short answer: A POS commission tracker should record who made each sale, apply your written rules at the moment the sale closes, support splits, and give you a report by person and period that you can take to payroll. In the UAE, the commission terms also need to be written in the employment contract, so the rules in the POS should mirror the contract.

The legal frame in the UAE
Commission pay is allowed under UAE employment law. A Khaleej Times explainer by Ashish Mehta, a Dubai-qualified lawyer, says commission-based contracts are recognised under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 and its Executive Regulations (published 12 July 2026). The same article says the contract should state how commission is calculated, the performance criteria and when it is paid, and that gratuity is based on the basic wage.
What this means for the software: the POS cannot invent rules. It should implement the rules your signed contract and your pay policy already contain, and let you show how any figure was calculated.
Six things a commission tracker should do
- Know who sold. Each cashier or stylist signs in with their own PIN, so every order carries their name.
- Support your rules. A percentage or a fixed amount, set per product, per category or for everything, with an override for one order.
- Calculate at the sale. The commission is worked out when the sale closes, not typed in later.
- Split between people. If two people share an order, the commission is divided by ratios you set.
- Report by person and period. Totals by staff member and date range that you can hand to payroll.
- Track payouts. Mark commission as paid and see what is outstanding.
A worked example
This is an illustration, not a recommendation of any rate. A salon sells a AED 210 treatment (AED 200 plus 5% VAT) and the stylist’s contract says 10% commission, calculated on the amount before VAT.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Treatment price before VAT | AED 200.00 |
| VAT at 5% | AED 10.00 |
| Commission base (before VAT, as per the contract) | AED 200.00 |
| Commission at 10% | AED 20.00 |
| If shared 60⁄40 with an assistant | AED 12.00 and AED 8.00 |
Three questions your written policy should answer before you configure anything:
- Is the base before or after VAT? VAT is not the business’s income, so many businesses use the amount before VAT. It is a policy choice and must match the contract.
- What happens on a discount? Commission on the discounted price, or the list price?
- What happens on a refund? Is commission reversed, and in which pay period?
Where it matters most
- Salons and spas: stylists often earn a share of services and products.
- Restaurants and cafés: shared commission on busy shifts.
- Retail and showrooms: incentives on selected products or categories.
Mistakes to avoid
- Paying commission on discounted or refunded sales without a written rule for it.
- Sharing one login between staff. Without personal logins there is no reliable record of who sold.
- Keeping the rules in a spreadsheet next to the POS. Two sources of truth drift apart.
- Treating the POS report as the contract. The report shows what the rule produced; the contract is what you owe.
