POS for Pop-Ups and Markets in the UAE: A Checklist

Short answer: For a pop-up or market stall you need a POS that keeps working when the Wi-Fi does not, runs on a tablet or laptop you already own, and prints a valid VAT receipt. If you are VAT-registered, the UAE Federal Tax Authority says a tax invoice must be issued and handed over for every taxable sale, even a small one. Offering to print it on request is not enough.

By the Pause POS team at Dynamic Web Lab FZE LLC. Last reviewed 30 October 2026. This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Trade licences and event permits depend on the emirate and the organiser, so check with them.

The checklist

  1. Does it keep selling without internet? Event Wi-Fi and mobile data are unreliable. The POS should keep taking orders and cash payments offline and send them when the connection returns.
  2. Does it run on a device you already have? An Android tablet or a Windows laptop with Chrome or Edge is enough for Pause POS. No special terminal to buy.
  3. How do you take cards? If your bank’s card machine is portable, keep using it and record the card payment in the POS.
  4. Is setup quick? Products and prices load when the POS opens, so you can prepare the night before.
  5. Does it print a proper VAT receipt? See the next section.
  6. Can you cash up at the end of the day? Open the session with a float and count the drawer at close.
  7. Can you bring customers back? A coupon code for the next visit to your shop turns a one-day buyer into a repeat customer.

What the receipt must show

The FTA’s public clarification VATP006 on tax invoices says a tax invoice must be issued and delivered for every taxable supply, including supplies where a simplified invoice is allowed. A simplified tax invoice can be used when the customer is not VAT-registered, or when the customer is registered and the supply is AED 10,000 or less. A simplified tax invoice (Article 59(2) of the VAT Executive Regulations) must show:

  • the words “Tax Invoice” clearly;
  • the supplier’s name, address and Tax Registration Number;
  • the date of issue;
  • a description of the goods or services; and
  • the total amount charged and the tax amount.

The same document says the FTA does not consider “print on request” to satisfy the duty to issue and deliver a tax invoice, and that on a simplified invoice line items are shown at the gross value. Pause POS prints VAT 5% receipts with your TRN and QR code in English and Arabic. Check the printed layout against the list above before your first event.

Do you need to be VAT-registered?

The FTA’s registration pages state a mandatory registration threshold of AED 375,000 of taxable supplies and imports over the previous 12 months (or expected in the next 30 days), and a voluntary threshold of AED 187,500. Both come from the Executive Regulation (Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017). See the FTA’s VAT registration page. A stall that sells only at events still counts those sales toward the threshold.

What about e-invoicing?

The Ministry of Finance’s Electronic Invoicing Guidelines v2.0 (section 6.2) say there is no obligation to issue an electronic invoice for a supply to a consumer who is not in business. Walk-up sales to the public at a market are therefore outside the e-invoicing requirement. If you sell to another business at an event, for example a corporate order, that sale is a business transaction and falls under the phased rollout for your revenue band. Read our guide to what happens if an e-invoice is rejected for the dates.

What to know about offline selling

Orders taken offline stay on that device until the connection returns, so keep the POS open on it until it has synced. Opening and closing a till session, and card payments on integrated terminals, need a connection. Cards taken on your own bank machine are recorded as usual. Test it before the event: switch the tablet to airplane mode, ring up three sales, switch it back, and confirm all three appear in the back office.

Printing at an event

Receipts print on an Epson TM-m30 series network printer. Check that the printer can join the network you will have on site, or carry your own small router. Carry a spare paper roll and decide in advance how you will still hand customers a tax invoice if the printer fails.

Keep your records

Under the Tax Procedures rules cited in the Ministry’s guide (section 5.4), taxable persons keep their records for 5 years after the tax period. Keep each event’s sales report and cash-up count with your VAT records.
